چکیده

The common practice of measuring the change in isotope ratio for the whole molecule using isotope ratio measurement by mass spectrometry leads to the loss of significant information of potential interest, since it is the position-specific fractionation which most closely reflects the effect of physicochemical processes. We have shown for MTBE, a common ground water contaminant, that isotopic quantitative C NMR spectrometry can be effectively applied to obtain this position-specific data. It is found that different characteristic position-specific isotope fractionation patterns are introduced by different types of evaporative process or by oxidative degradation. © 2015 The Authors. Probing the non-covalent structure of proteins by amide hydrogen exchange and mass spectrometry.

The rates at which hydrogens located at peptide amide linkages in proteins undergo isotopic exchange when a protein is exposed to D2O depend on whether these amide hydrogens are hydrogen bonded and whether they are accessible to the aqueous solvent. Hence, amide hydrogen exchange rates are a sensitive probe for detecting changes in protein conformation and dynamics. Hydrogen exchange rates in p...

Application of Stable Isotope-Assisted Metabolomics for Cell Metabolism Studies

The applications of stable isotopes in metabolomics have facilitated the study of cell metabolisms. Stable isotope-assisted metabolomics requires: (1) properly designed tracer experiments; (2) stringent sampling and quenching protocols to minimize isotopic alternations; (3) efficient metabolite separations; (4) high resolution mass spectrometry to resolve overlapping peaks and background noises...

Position-specific isotope modeling of organic micropollutants transformation through different reaction pathways.

The degradation of organic micropollutants occurs via different reaction pathways. Compound specific isotope analysis is a valuable tool to identify such degradation pathways in different environmental systems. We propose a mechanism-based modeling approach that provides a quantitative framework to simultaneously evaluate concentration as well as bulk and position-specific multi-element isotope...

Uranium in Urine: Quantification and Isotope Ratio Determination

While the quantification of uranium is therefore demanding in the diluted sample, uranium isotope ratio determination requires the ultimate in instrumental performance as good precisions for large isotope ratios are required at low concentrations. The abundances of the three naturally occurring U isotopes are shown in Table 1, together with the 234U/238U and 235U/238U ratios. The nuclear indust...
